To connect the communicator to the internet we currently have three methods available.
1. The most common way is to use a computer on site with the communicator.  The unit came supplied with two cables to allow this connection to be made.  Supplied is one USB cable which is standard for most computers today.  The second cable which is less common is the serial port adapter cable.  Both of the cables are just a means to connect the computer to the communicator much in the same way as you would connect a printer. If the USB connection becomes damaged due to storm issues then you can use the serial port adapter before having to make repairs to the boards in the communicator.
2. The second most common way to connect the communicator to the internet is to use the motem and direct dial from a telephone line.  This works like the older fax machines. You will need a motem adapter for your computer to allow you to use the phone line then you just dial into the communicator like making a phone call.  This method is somewhat slower connection rate but is reliable and works.
3. The third method to connect the communicator is the ethernet card.  This is not supplied and must be purchased separately.  This method will allow you to directly connect the communicator to the internet source.  This then will be routed through rotem servers so you can directly link to the communicator.  This method will require a account to be setup and to register your communicator with the Rotem servers.
